{"id":15456,"date":"2026-04-24T11:01:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T11:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/?post_type=insight&#038;p=15456"},"modified":"2026-05-21T13:16:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T13:16:50","slug":"american-business-owner-mexican-tomato-farm-owner-shares-tariff-experience","status":"publish","type":"insight","link":"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/insights\/article\/american-business-owner-mexican-tomato-farm-owner-shares-tariff-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"American Business Owner, Mexican Tomato Farm Owner Shares Tariff Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<!-- .module.article-rich-text: start -->\n<div id=\"\" class=\"module article-rich-text pt-32 md:pt-48 xl:pt-56 pb-16 md:pb-20 xl:pb-24 hidden show-small:block show-medium:block show-large:block [p_+_p]:mb-24\">\n\t<p>Despite being an American citizen and business owner living in Florida, Blue Creek Produce Owner, Roger Riehm\u2019s tomato farm is located in Jalisco, Mexico\u2014selling cherry and grape tomatoes into the US during a time of elevated tariffs specifically targeting Mexican-grown tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a \u2018Yo-Yo\u2019 market, and it\u2019s been changing daily over the last six months,\u201d said Riehm during a phone call with Expana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a challenging year. Whether it\u2019s finding trucks, rides, freight rates&#8230; I\u2019ve been doing this 25 years, and this last year has been one of the most difficult&#8230; The tariff on tomatoes has been crazy over last eight months. I understand that the idea is to protect growers in Florida&#8230; But for me, I\u2019m still dealing with that [tariff coming] right out of my checking account on every shipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Riehm wondered where his tariff payments were going, and whether he had any shot at a tariff refund. Although, he acknowledged that the \u201cTomato Suspension Agreement\u201d had been a noteworthy factor since 2004. Since being lifted, the US simply charges a ~17% tariff on any Mexican tomato imports, rather than setting a price for those imports.<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"SubTitle\">Weather Impacts Tomato Prices, Supply<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>At the same time, he has been watching the weather for potential impacts, and of course watching <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/markets\/fruits-vegetables-juices\/tomato-prices\/\">tomato pricing<\/a><\/span> out of Mexico, the US, and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida hasn&#8217;t had a lot of tomatoes this year,\u201d said Riehm, who alluded to the frost damage incurred by Sunshine State growers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re struggling with round and Roma tomatoes, and there\u2019s a small window before they stop [harvesting] in June. So, [Mexican producers] have absorbed the costs, and the consumer is also paying for it one way or another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mexican producers have also faced their own share of weather issues, said Riehm\u2014contributing to a North American tomato market with less supply this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t had great production out of Mexico&#8230; We\u2019ve been at about 20% less availability for a lot of commodities&#8230; We\u2019ve seen it in peppers and limes due to weather issues around Mexico. So, pricing has been stronger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve had cold weather that has affected blossom drop for the future crop. It could be until this May before we see normal production from cold weather impacts and rain impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year, the value of grape tomatoes priced in the Chicago terminal has increased approximately 140-156% year-over-year (YOY) to 266.67 USc\/Lb on\u00a0the lower range\u00a0&#8211; 275 USc\/Lb on the higher range, according to the\u00a0Expana platform.<\/p>\n<p>The North American tomato market has also affected the pricing and availability of tomatoes in foodservice channels as well, said Riehm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 25 Lb boxes of round tomatoes that buyers like Burger King uses for Whoppers are normally $20\/box, and now they\u2019re $60\/box,\u201d he claimed. \u201cAnd some of the brands, like Hello Fresh, substituted grape tomatoes instead of round and Romas. I\u2019ve seen them leave little notes to their food box customers that say their business has been impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"SubTitle\">Other Factors Contributing to Tomato Prices<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>The current price and availability of tomatoes in the US is not only subject to tariff costs and Trump administration policies, but also weather impacts and higher energy and shipping costs too, reported\u00a0Expana. Riehm confirmed the factors affecting tomato prices and availability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re dealing with trucks and diesel&#8230; I\u2019m paying $8,000 for truck shipments which were normally $5,000,\u201d he said. \u201cAlso, a lot of drivers won\u2019t drive toward California if they don&#8217;t speak English in fear of getting pulled over. So, we\u2019ve lost a lot of drivers, which has driven freight prices higher to get tomatoes and produce to the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar prices were given in a\u00a0recent analysis piece\u00a0by Expana\u2019s Market Reporter, Laura Robb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDomestic freight costs are experiencing parallel increases driven primarily by fuel price escalations. Importers report receiving fuel surcharge notifications from Northeast producers scheduled to begin in mid-May, with some [vegetable importers] paying over $9,000 for domestic truck transportation to destination markets,\u201d wrote Robb.<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"SubTitle\">Background<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>On April 14, 2025, the US Department of Commerce announced the withdrawal from the 2019 Agreement Suspending the Antidumping Investigation on Fresh Tomatoes from Mexico, reported\u00a0Expana.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, the US and Mexico inked the Tomato Suspension Agreement (TSA) after similar antidumping claims. This came before and is separate from the current US-Mexico-Canada Free Trade Agreement (USMCA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the TSA, Mexican tomato producers agreed to sell fresh tomatoes in the US market at set reference prices, and in return, the US suspended the antidumping duty investigation,\u201d according to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/southernagtoday.org\/2025\/04\/09\/tomato-trade-wars-how-the-suspension-agreement-with-mexico-shapes-the-u-s-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southern Ag
