As of February 12,\u00a0the Union of Farmers and Livestock Breeders of Andalusia, (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coagandalucia.com\/2026\/02\/12\/coag-andalucia-exige-ayudas-potentes-para-recuperar-la-capacidad-productiva-del-sector-frente-a-los-desastres-climaticos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COAG<\/a><\/span>) is lobbying for government support after the succession of storms, according to the Spanish organization\u00a0lead by an olive and almond grower from the Ja\u00e9n region, General Secretary\u00a0Juan Luis \u00c1vila Castro.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/library.urnerbarry.com\/Images\/Spain_January_PRCP_Anomaly.jpeg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Figure 1. Spain\u2019s 2026 January precipitation percentage change compared to the 30-year average.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFollowing the relentless succession of storms, the viability of thousands of farms is being jeopardized, as they have no time to recover between weather events. Thus, more than 20% of agricultural production is already considered lost (according to the Andalusian Regional Government), a figure that is expected to skyrocket once the current data collection is completed early next week,\u201d\u00a0COAG said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As of February 10, &#8220;the damage to [Portuguese] agriculture has been substantial, affecting both crops and infrastructure: Devastated forests, uprooted fruit and olive trees, destroyed greenhouses, flattened vineyards, flooded vegetable fields and pastures, severely damaged walls, animal shelters, and warehouses,\u201d according to\u00a0a community organization called\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/viacampesina.org\/en\/2026\/02\/portugal-immediate-compensation-is-needed-for-farmers-affected-by-storm-kristin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Via Campesina<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0whose officials estimated that\u00a0farmers will suffer significant income losses in the coming months, and even years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On February 4, the Portuguese government provided an overall 40-million-euro\u00a0assistance, as a non-refundable grant, to restore the production in the farms hit by storm Kristin, according to a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portugal.gov.pt\/en\/gc25\/communication\/news-item?i=agriculture-40-million-euros-for-farms-hit-by-storm-kristin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">government\u00a0news\u00a0release<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"SubTitle\">Highest rainfall recorded in Spain in a quarter of a century\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In January 2026,\u00a0Southern Spain received 90-150% more rainfall than usual, according to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Expana\u2019s Global Weather News report (customer access only)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Heavy rains\u00a0could\u00a0delay fieldwork, promote fungal disease, cause blemishes and rotting, and reduce crop yield.\u00a0Spain, a top strawberry exporter, could feel that market tighten\u00a0if excess rainfall continues.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Spanish meteorological agency\u00a0AEMET\u00a0said this week January recorded the highest rainfall in the country\u00a0in a quarter of a century,\u00a0around 185% of the normal, and\u00a0only behind 2001.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThese past few weeks there have been anticyclonic blockings over Greenland or the Scandinavian Peninsula, which have diverted the low-pressure systems to the south. To this we must add that the Azores High is positioned farther south,\u201d the AEMET said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are already reports of\u00a0this weather\u00a0impacting\u00a0Spain\u2019s\u00a0vegetable and fruit crops.\u00a0In Murcia, limited supply of open ground crops including artichokes, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and spinach was reported due to persistent rains. Stocks are sufficient for regular customers, but spot market supply is low.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Huelva, extreme\u00a0winds\u00a0and rainy conditions damaged\u00a0numerous\u00a0strawberry greenhouses.\u00a0Oversaturation\u00a0can\u00a0cause rotting, and\u00a0growers\u00a0expect reduced quality. January&#8217;s weather limited flowering, fruit set, and delayed fruit development. In\u00a0the last week of January\u00a02026, marketed strawberry volumes\u00a0were 50% lower than last year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSeveral key producers in the region have been dealing heavy rains and even flooding in some areas. Storm conditions in December created logistical disruptions for Morocco, and in Spain torrential rain has left crops submerged, according to reports,\u201d explained Craig Elliot, Market Reporter at Expana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBoth countries are major producers of tomatoes, and prices for some varieties out of Spain are elevated in YOY terms. Although the extent of the damage is yet to be\u00a0determined, farmers in Spain have reported crop damage worth millions of euros across the country,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"SubTitle\">Other Regions Affected Too\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/library.urnerbarry.com\/Images\/Italy_January_PRCP_Anomaly.jpeg\" width=\"800\" height=\"754\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><em>Figure 2. Italy\u2019s 2026 January precipitation percentage change compared to the 30-year average.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Italy, parts of the country received 150% more rainfall than average in January. Artichokes in Sardinia were weakened by excess water. Heavy rainfall can flood fields which cause rotting and disease. Botrytis and downy mildew spread, which reduced production and quality. Plus, January frosts damaged spinach crops and suspended harvesting. As of Expana\u2019s January weather report, Italian spinach supply was down 80%.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Just like in the case of Spain,\u00a0Italy is a major exporter of these vegetables, and\u00a0damages\u00a0may\u00a0tighten global export supply.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Regions like Italy, Portugal, Spain, and across Europe experienced especially wet weather and\u00a0strong winds\u00a0in the beginning of 2026.\u00a0Plus, infrastructure used by businesses and locals alike had been affected,\u00a0worsening\u00a0the outcomes as the poor conditions persisted in January into February.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This\u00a0winter season has been tough for European farmers, as well as those on the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">US East Coast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0too\u2014where below freezing temperatures were\u00a0felt in January and February
