{"id":11862,"date":"2025-08-07T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/?post_type=insight&#038;p=11862"},"modified":"2026-02-25T15:32:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T15:32:35","slug":"trumps-new-50-tariff-on-india-threatens-shrimp-exports-to-the-us","status":"publish","type":"insight","link":"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/insights\/article\/trumps-new-50-tariff-on-india-threatens-shrimp-exports-to-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s New 50% Tariff on India Threatens Shrimp Exports to the US"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<!-- .module.article-rich-text: start -->\n<div id=\"\" class=\"module article-rich-text pt-32 md:pt-48 xl:pt-56 pb-40 md:pb-64 xl:pb-80 hidden show-small:block show-medium:block show-large:block [p_+_p]:mb-24\">\n\t<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">India, the United States&#8217; leading supplier of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/markets\/protein\/seafood\/shrimp-prices\/\">shrimp<\/a><\/span>, now faces a daunting 50% tariff on its <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/markets\/protein\/seafood\/\">seafood<\/a><\/span> exports, one of the steepest rates among all US trading partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on all Indian imports, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/insights\/article\/trump-targets-india-americas-largest-shrimp-source-with-25-import-tariff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">just days after a previous 25% hike<\/a><\/span>, effectively doubling the hurdle for exporters. The move by Trump serves as a penalty on India for purchasing Russian oil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,\u201d Trump said in an August 6 executive order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional\u00a0<em>ad valorem\u00a0<\/em>rate of duty of 25 percent,\u201d per the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/08\/addressing-threats-to-the-united-states-by-the-government-of-the-russian-federation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">The new rate takes effect 21 days after the order. Exceptions apply for goods already in transit and those cleared by September 17, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis rate of duty shall be effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 21 days after the date of this order, except for goods that (1) were loaded onto a vessel at the port of loading and in transit on the final mode of transit prior to entry into the United States before 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 21 days after the date of this order; and (2) are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, before 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on September 17, 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The massive tariff rate now threatens Indian seafood exports, most notably shrimp. Last year, India was the third-most valuable seafood importer to the US. The country shipped $2.5 billion worth of seafood, per Expana\u2019s Foreign Trade Data platform. The 648 million pounds of shrimp that hit US shores were worth over $2 billion of that total.<\/p>\n<p>When the initial 25% tariff was announced, Expana\u2019s shrimp market reporting team warned of heightened uncertainty and potential market disruption. With the rate now doubled, those concerns have grown more urgent.<\/p>\n<p>Even prior to the latest increase, Expana analyst Fabienne O&#8217;Donoghue\u00a0highlighted the significant headwinds facing India&#8217;s shrimp exports, despite a recent uptick in shipments as buyers rushed to secure product ahead of the higher tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Indian media has closely covered the headwinds impacting the shrimp industry as the initial 25% tariff was put in place. Now, even more pressure is placed on India\u2019s critical shrimp industry. One publication reported that exporters could see volumes drop by just shy of 10% due to the new tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Indian shrimp is also now pressured by other top-producing nations like Ecuador, which face significantly lower\u00a0tariff rates.\u00a0The 25% rate was just a shade lower than competitors like\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0and\u00a0Vietnam, but now, India\u2019s rate is more than double
