{"id":11268,"date":"2025-07-18T09:00:46","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T09:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/?post_type=insight&#038;p=11268"},"modified":"2026-03-02T10:04:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T10:04:06","slug":"new-unica-cane-crushing-numbers-drop-expana-attends-brazilian-sugar-conference","status":"publish","type":"insight","link":"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/insights\/article\/new-unica-cane-crushing-numbers-drop-expana-attends-brazilian-sugar-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"New UNICA Cane Crushing Numbers Drop; Expana Attends Brazilian Sugar Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<!-- .module.article-rich-text: start -->\n<div id=\"\" class=\"module article-rich-text pt-32 md:pt-48 xl:pt-56 pb-40 md:pb-64 xl:pb-80 hidden show-small:block show-medium:block show-large:block [p_+_p]:mb-24\">\n\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During the second half of June 2025, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expanamarkets.com\/markets\/tropical-softs\/sugar-sweeteners\/\">sugar<\/a><\/span> production in Brazil\u2019s main center-south (CS) area fell nearly 13% year on year, according to UNICA (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Brazilian Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Association<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite both sugar production and sugarcane crushing coming in below June estimates, the sugar mix &#8211; the percent of total sucrose used for sugar production &#8211; came in at a record high, according to the Tropical Research Services (TRS) team at Expana.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The situation mimics the report industry members received regarding the first half of June &#8211; production in Brazil\u2019s main sugar region decreased 22%. Industry participants were expecting a decline in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/app.expanamarkets.com\/en\/article\/709943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brazilian\u00a0sugar production<\/a><\/span> (customer access only). However, the decline in June 2025 was <\/span><em><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than expected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"SubTitle\"><strong>Brazilian Weather &amp; Sugar Production<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While there is less sugarcane available year-over-year, the availability was not the issue that caused the production and crushing decreases in June, according to Rodrigo Bermejo, a Sugar &amp; Ethanol Analyst on the TRS team at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Expana<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLast year, in the first half of June, it was completely dry,\u201d explained Bermejo who noted significant rainfall in April as well as in June. \u201cBut for the last fortnight this year, [sugar] mills lost two-to-three days to rainfall stoppages. This is basically what caused sugar production to decrease year-over-year &#8211; it&#8217;s not related to cane availability. There was lower crushing because of the rains.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The recent frost is also worth highlighting, noted Bermejo. Some CS Brazil fields (mostly in Paran\u00e1 and Mato Grosso do Sul states, but also some in S\u00e3o Paulo and Minas Gerais) were impacted by an event that occurred during the second half of June.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis frost was more widespread than initially thought,\u201d said Bermejo. \u201cInitially, mills thought [frost] it was localized. So, this is what we call \u2018the mix.\u2019 The cane is crushed, and the resulting juice contains sucrose (or ATR).
